1. The State of Charge May Need to Be Matched
A new battery module and your existing modules may have very different States of Charge (SOC).
For some battery systems, the modules need to be brought to compatible charge levels before they are connected.
Ignoring manufacturer requirements can potentially lead to communication problems, errors or difficulties commissioning the expanded system.
2. Firmware Compatibility Matters
Modern solar batteries aren't just boxes full of cells. They contain sophisticated electronics and software that control charging, discharging, safety and communication with other components.
An older battery system may be running different firmware from a newly manufactured module.
If the versions aren't compatible, the system may require firmware updates or additional configuration before the new module operates correctly.
3. The Battery Management System Needs to Recognise the Expansion
The BMS plays an important role in monitoring and controlling the battery.
After additional modules are installed, the system may need to recognise the new configuration, correctly address each module and confirm that communication between the modules, BMS and inverter is working.
That can involve recommissioning rather than simply connecting another cable.
Your Warranty Is Another Important Consideration
Battery manufacturers have specific installation and expansion procedures.
Failing to follow those requirements may affect warranty coverage, particularly if an issue is caused by incorrect installation, commissioning or an unauthorised modification.
Before expanding a battery, it's therefore important to check:
Whether your existing battery model supports expansion
Whether the new module is compatible with the existing system
Manufacturer requirements for battery expansion
Firmware and BMS compatibility
Existing and new module State of Charge requirements
Warranty conditions
Whether the inverter supports the increased storage capacity
Electrical and physical installation requirements
Why Professional Battery Expansion Matters
Home battery systems involve potentially hazardous electrical equipment, including high DC voltages.
That's why battery expansion should not be treated as a DIY project simply because the modules have been designed to stack together.
A qualified installer can assess the existing system, confirm compatibility, follow manufacturer procedures and properly recommission the system after the additional storage has been installed.
It also provides an opportunity to check whether adding more modules is actually the best solution.
Sometimes your household may benefit from additional battery capacity. In other situations, changes to solar capacity, inverter configuration or energy usage could be worth considering as part of the upgrade.
